information about Taj Mahal historys Once you know the real history behind this everlasting symbol of love, a visit to the Taj Mahal is worth seeing. Known as the undying symbol of love, the origin and History of Taj Mahal Agra goes back to the early 17th Century.

After becoming an emperor in 1628, Shah Jahan entrusted Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess, with the royal seal. He lovingly called her Mumtaz Mahal, "Crown of the Palace" Mumtaz, the emperor's second wife, was her husband’s inseparable companion. She even followed him on his military expeditions and hunting journeys.

It was during one of the military expedition in Burhanpur in central India, that Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631, shortly after giving birth to her 14th child. On her deathbed, she made the emperor to promise to make a lovely monument unlike any other in the world as the tribute to their loving moments that were a treasure for her. The emperor kept the promise faithfully and decided to immortalize the memory of his beloved wife by building the finest sepulcher ever - a monument of eternal love which we today know as the "Taj Mahal" and thus, Taj was conceived.

Construction of Taj Mahal in India began in 1632, thousands of workers flocked to Agra from other parts of the Mughal empire to give shape to emperor’s passionate dream.

Two Persian architect Ustad Isa alias and Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, was vested with the responsibility of translating the conception into a reality. But it is believed that Shah Jahan himself was probably the chief designer of his wife’s tomb.

The material for the construction of Taj Mahal in India s brought in from all over India and central Asia with over 1000 elephants used to transport building materials to the site of construction. The complex was finally completed after 22 years in 1653 at an expenditure of approximately 32 million rupees on the banks of river Yamuna in Agra. When the monument was finally built, the grave of Mumtaz Mahal was shifted to the grave chamber in the lower part of Taj Mahal. This beautiful mausoleum still continues to lure visitors with its charismatic and aesthetic beauty ... and for the romantic story that inspired its construction.
